Sustainability in packaging and how Soco is contributing to Eco-friendly living
Share
Environmental awareness and sustainability initiatives are growing to be two of the most important and concerning goals of the past decade. As mass industrial pollution and overpopulation keeps growing and big name brand companies continue to greenwash, we recognize and value the importance of true sustainability and eco-friendliness. After extensive research, the Soco Sands team has come to the conclusion that one of the biggest contributors to pollution (plastic and cardboard pollution, to be more accurate) comes from the packaging of products.

Why is it so Important?
---
According to Bulk Bag Reclamation, one of the United States biggest recycling and waste management and sorting agencies, we throw away 77.9 tons of packaging every year. That’s almost 30% of the total waste generated in the United States ANNUALLY! With irresponsible packaging being at such a high percentage, we have to at least start looking into sustainable, recyclable and biodegradable packaging.
---
Even if we cannot recycle everything, methods and packaging such as plant-based materials don't need to be recycled as they can biodegrade, due to their organic nature and build, they decompose just like any other organic waste, like a banana peel. You can even add biodegradable waste and packaging to your composting bins!
---
The problem with plastics and other non recyclable or biodegradable materials is that plastic never actually decomposes. It breaks down into smaller and smaller, and smaller particles that eventually become what we know as microplastics. Which inevitably, end up in our water sources, infecting our drinking supply, and food.

What is Eco-Friendly Packaging & How Does Soco Contribute to the Cause?
---
To understand what eco-friendly packaging is, we must first understand what eco-friendly means and is. The term “Eco” means earth, and you should know what being friendly is already. But “eco-friendly” refers to items and products, or services that are specifically designed to provide us with the needs and comforts we normally would need or use them for, without being harmful to the environment.
---
Traditionally on a massive scale, companies have put packaging together without much if any thought to where the packaging would end up, after it reached the consumer. Suppliers focus more on protecting their products and services from risks or damages, using plastic, Styrofoam, and other environmentally harmful materials to package and protect their products and services. However, these materials and packages are not very eco-friendly at all. In fact, 80% + of packaging materials are not environmentally friendly at all. In the modern day, the push from consumers, scientists and governments towards environmental consciousness, this means businesses are being pushed to find or create alternative methods of protecting their products through packaging, shifting away from traditional materials.
